New York State Tests are standardized assessments taken by all students in grades 3–8. Schools use them to see whether students are on track with grade-level skills or need extra support. Strong scores can also help students qualify for advanced math classes or enrichment programs.

Reading:
- Multiple Choice
- Grade-level passages, including fiction, nonfiction, poems, and articles
Writing
- Short response
- Longer response (essay)
- Using evidence from the text

Multiple Choice:
- Around 30-40 grade-level problems
- Requires reading and understanding word problems
Constructed Response:
- Students must show work and write reasoning

- Only taken by Grades 5 & 8

- Requires reading paragraphs about life science, physical science, and earth/space science
